Hypertension: The Basics
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when blood pushes too hard against artery walls, often without symptoms. It increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Risk factors include aging, having obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise. Diagnosis is based on blood pressure readings. Treatment includes lifestyle changes and medication.
