Dehydration: The Basics

Dehydration happens when you're losing more fluid and electrolytes than you're taking in. If you’re thirsty, have dark-colored urine, or feel tired or confused, you may be dehydrated. Risk factors for dehydration include living with diabetes or kidney disease, having a stomach virus or the flu, and drinking alcohol. How much fluid you need per day depends on several factors such as your age and body weight. In general, you should aim for drinking 15 cups of fluid per day if you’re a man and 11 cups per day if you're a woman.
